Johannes Stümpfle has just returned from three months as a visiting researcher at the Inria Centre at the University of Lille in France, where he teamed up with the Spirals team to advance his research on generative AI for software variability.
The main thread running through the visit was a question that still doesn't have a clean answer: how do you bring real semantic understanding into the way we build and manage the different variants of big modern software systems? That missing piece is exactly what makes it hard to create and maintain large families of variants today. The joint work in Lille pushed this idea a good step forward.
