Small talk and making a good first impression

How can I present myself well without coming across as arrogant? What are some good icebreaker strategies for small talk? And how can I present myself in conversation in such a way that my counterpart (even if they have no connection to science) becomes curious and wants to know more?  And what should I do if I don’t know what else to say?

This three-hour online workshop is all about learning everything you need to know about making successful connections and pitching your career path and yourself in a way that is tailored to your audience. Interactive exercises will teach you individual communication techniques for pitching and small talk – with plenty of humour and scientifically based insights. In addition, we get to know about the basics of making a good first impression (body language, posture, voice) and self-confidence are taught. Each participant receives individual feedback and tips for improvement.

Contents

  • Small talk (making contact, questions, answers, symmetry in small talk and empathic listening)
  • Successful pitching (pitching yourself and your own research work)
  • Making a good first impression

Objectives

  • Teaching communication skills for small talk, pitches, job interviews and networking activities in general (e.g. at trade fairs)
  • Working on your own profile and knowledge of communicative self-marketing
  • Building self-confidence for future networking situations

The training will be held in English and is open to all international students.
