Cooperation with ACONIT

Computer Museum at the Department of Computer Science

Projects of the ACONIT Computermuseum Grenoble and the Computer Museum at the Department of Computer Science

From June 23 to 24, 2024, Klemens Krause, Christian Corti, Ralph Braun and Katja Stefanie Engstler were guest at the ACONIT (Association pour un conservatoire de l’informatique et de la télématique) Grenoble to get an insight into the collectionand and support the team in repairing the IBM 1130 system and recommissioning the PDP-9.-

We would like to thank for the support of the Dr. Karl and Elisabeth Eisele Foundation.

The association ACONIT (Association pour un CONservatoire de l' Informatique et de la Télématique) was founded in 1985. The aim of the association is to preserve the intellectual heritage and know-how that illustrates the history of the development of information and communication technologies. In addition to its purely conservational role, ACONIT presents the historical development of information technology to a wide audience in Grenoble and the surrounding area through lectures, guided tours and events. The museum also has a large number of microcomputers from the 1980s with retro computer games. Parts of the collection are exhibited in institutions, universities and companies, and there is a permanent exhibition in the "Institut de la communication et des médias" (ICM).

The association is supported by the "Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche" and has taken on the task of inventorying and archiving hardware and software relevant to the history of information processing.

The collection includes a wide range of calculating machines, punch card machines, computers and peripheral devices, as well as data carriers, media and extensive documentation such as technical documents and manuals. Of particular interest, especially for the Stuttgart Computer Museum and for interested parties from abroad, are the computers developed and produced in France, such as the tube-based BULL Gamma 3 (early 1950s), the Mitra 15 minicomputer and others from "cii" and microcomputers such as those from the manufacturer SMT Goupil, which stand out due to their design and color scheme.

Collection overview

Particularly outstanding items in the collection are the IBM 1130 system (built in 1969), the Telefunken TR4 with teak paneling (built in 1964), which is the only one of its kind in the world, and two equally rare PDP-9 systems from Digital Equipment (built in 1968). These collector's items are presented in the videos.
