The old / expiring examination regulations

If an examination regulation is replaced by an updated version, an end date is also set for the older examination regulation. This older regulation always ends with some delay to the introduction of the new regulation, so that students who are still studying according to the old regulation can also complete their studies. No one can be enrolled in an expiring examination regulation. Here are the examination regulations for the B.Sc. Data Science program that still exist but are expiring:

The current examination regulations

The current examination regulations are those according to which all new students or students who change their course of study are enrolled. It was approved on 08.07.2022:

You can find the summary of the regulations of these examination regulations here.

Applications to the examiantion board

In accordance with the respective examination regulations, students may submit applications to the examination board if they require compensation for a disadvantage, are unable to meet a specified deadline, wish to have achievements from another course of study recognized, or have to withdraw from an examination outside the set deadline for reasons other than health. Further information on the individual applications can be found under the respective heading on this page.

In general:

  • Applications must always be made in writing. An application by mail is possible. However, an application must always have been signed personally.
  • If there is no form for it, an application is an informal letter that you have to formulate yourself.
  • In an application you have to include:
    • Your personal data: Name Ihre persönlichen Daten: name, first name, Vorname, postal address,e-mail address (please mention one that you read on a regular basis)
    • Your student data: the study program with the intended degree, matriculation number,  Matrikelnummer, the actual semester you are in
  • All applications must be accompanied by a current performance record from the C@mpus system and, if applicable, further evidence or a detailed justification for the application.

Upon request, the examination board can recognize achievements in your current degree program that were completed during another degree program or during a stay abroad at another university. The work performed must be related to the subject and must meet the requirements of your current degree program in terms of scope and standards.

For the recognitions, please submit the form of the examination office, the corresponding certificates and the current performance record (for recognitions in the Master's program also the performance record from the Bachelor's program) to the examination board.

If you need a certificate of your study progress (form 5), please directly go to the Studierendenwerk, as this form can be filled out there. Please take the current performance record for BAföG from the C@mpus system with you.

If you require a proof of the expected end of your studies for BAföG funding, please contact the examination board with the relevant form from the BAföG office and a current record of achievement from the C@mpus system.

Further information and links can be found here.

The Examination Committee may approve the extension of deadlines in exceptional cases. Please noted that for any extension of the deadline, the reasons why the extension is necessary must be clearly justified and documented. For example, a medical certificate must include not only the duration of the illness but also the effect of the symptoms that hinder you to take the examination. A simple certificate of incapacity for work or a sick note from the doctor will not be accepted for the application for an extension of the deadline.

Deadlines can be extended for:

  • writing the thesis (Bachelor or Master):
    • The processing period of the thesis can be extended (in intervals or en block) by a maximum of 3 months in total. It will only be granted in exceptional cases such as illness or if you are not responsible for the delay in the processing.
    • To request an extension of time, please fill out this form completely. The examiner must certify on it whether he/she agrees with the request. Additionally, appropriate evidence (e.g. medical certificate) and a current performance record from the C@mpus system showing the registration of the work must be attached.
  • the maximum duration of the study program (Bachelor or Master):
    • The maximum period of study in the department of Computer Science is 12 semesters for the Bachelor's degree and 9 semesters for the Master's degree. After this time has elapsed, you will be exmatriculated and no more credits can be recorded in the system. If you are unable to complete your studies in the specified maximum period of study, e.g. due to illness or other external circumstances for which you are not responsible, you can apply to the examination board for an appropriate extension of the period of study.
    • This form must be completed in full for an application. In addition, evidence or reasons for the application as well as a current performance record (with all passed and, if applicable, still registered performances) must be attached.
  • the orientation exam (Bachelor):
    • The orientation examination must be taken by the end of the 3rd semester. If you are unable to do so due to illness or other external circumstances for which you are not responsible, you can apply to the examination board for an appropriate extension of the deadline.
    • This form must be completed in full for an application. In addition, evidence or reasons for the application as well as a current performance record (with all passed and, if applicable, still registered performances) must be attached.

The application and all documents must be submitted to the Examining Board BEFORE the deadline for which the extension is requested.

If you are ill for an extended period of time during the course of your studies, please be sure to inquire about the possibility of taking a semester off.

Upon request, the examination board can approve that students in the Master's program can replace elective modules in the program with modules from another Master's program at the University of Stuttgart. The desired module must correspond to the level of the current degree program (for exceptions see next section) and the student must provide a detailed justification of the added value of the respective module for the current degree program. The request must be submitted to the examination board together with a current transcript of records.

Upon request, the examination board can approve that students in the master's program can substitute elective modules in the amount of up to 12 ECTS with modules from a bachelor's program. The student must give detailed reasons why the respective module is required in the Master's program and prove that he/she has not already taken it in the Bachelor's program. The application must be submitted to the examination board together with a current transcript of records from the Master's program and the complete transcript of records from the Bachelor's program.

You can find all information on the topic of studying with disabilities and chronic illness on the central pages of the university.

The Examination Board will only process applications for withdrawal for personal reasons that do not meet the deadline. In such a case, please contact the chairman of the examination board of your study program with the form deposited here and completed by you as well as a detailed explanation and, if necessary, supporting documents or evidence.

In all other cases, the withdrawal from the examination shall take place either

  • directly via the C@mpus-System or
  • via handing in a medical certificate at the examinations office (please use the contact form or go directly to the examination).

You can also find all the information about exam withdrawal once again summarized here on one page.

Information about

In the department of Computer Science, a contract on the legal framework is concluded for all final theses (Bachelor and Master) as well as for various interim theses. In addition, a license agreement for the possible publication of the thesis in the library system of the university (OPUS) must be included for the final theses. If applicable, a non-disclosure agreement may also be part of the contract for final theses.

All theses with a grade of 2.0 or better will be published (provided the student has given permission and there is no non-disclosure agreement). All theses will also be mentioned on the department pages for theses. The thesis itself will only be published as pdf if the above mentioned conditions are fulfilled. Intermediate theses will not be published.

Further information on the framework conditions for theses can be found on these pages.

The Data Science project is worked on independently by the students in small groups. They develop, implement and evaluate their own solution to a data science problem. The main purpose of the project is to deepen important foundations for later professional practice. The topics for these projects usually originate from the research topics of the various research groups that are significantly involved in the Data Science course program. In order to plan the courses, the program manager sends a request by e-mail in the preceding semester (June/July or November/December).

All information about exam withdrawal is summarized on this page.

If you want (or have) to change your course of study, you submit an application for a higher semester in your student account in the C@mpus system. The classification into the semester will then be made by the examination board on the basis of your performance. It can therefore differ from the semester in the old degree program.

Additionally, you have to upload a current performance record from the C@mpus system for this application. Please use the performance record, which shows all registered exams in addition to the passed performances.

The general deadline for an application to the higher semester of another study program is March 15 for the summer semester and September 15 for the winter semester. If the program you want to apply to has an NC on the higher semester (like Media Informatics), then the deadlines are as follows: January 15 for the summer semester and July 15 for the winter semester. It should also be noted that in such cases you have to apply according to the rotation, i.e. to an even semester in summer and to an odd semester in winter. This is not the case if there is no NC on the higher semester.
