University of Stuttgart once again successful in international rankings

In two international rankings, the World University Ranking by Subject 2023 of Quacquarelli Symonds and the “Best Scientists Ranking” of Research.com, researchers and departments from the University of Stuttgart achieve excellent rankings.

In two subjects once again among the 100 best universities in the world

In the current QS World University Ranking by Subject 2023 , two individual disciplines at the University of Stuttgart have been particularly successful: With “Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing”, the University of Stuttgart ranked #43 internationally. This is an improvement of four places over the previous year and puts the University of Stuttgart in the top 10% of the 520 universities listed worldwide for “Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing”. In the discipline “Architecture/Built Environmental”, the University of Stuttgart is ranked 51–100 internationally.

The University of Stuttgart also performed well in “Engineering and Technology” – as one of the five overarching areas ranked. With a score of 71.8, it achieved an international ranking of 167, thus placing it in the top third of the 530 ranks awarded worldwide. 

About the QS Ranking

The QS Rankings of the British service provider Quacquarelli Symonds are among the most important international rankings. For the Rankings by Subject, which are aimed primarily at prospective students, the strength of its scientific reputation, the citation frequency of research publications, the involvement in international research networks, and the results of large global employer surveys, among other factors, are evaluated. The indicators are weighted differently depending on the subject culture. The thirteenth edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject covers five subject groups with 54 disciplines and is based on an analysis of 15,700 degree programs from more than 2,800 universities worldwide. Of these, just under 1,600 made it into the ranking. In relation to Germany, 731 study programs from 60 universities were listed.

Five Stuttgart researchers designated as top scientists

In the current edition of the Best Scientists Ranking of the academic platform for researchers “Research.com”, five scientists from the University of Stuttgart are listed in the fields of Business Management and Electronics & Electrical Engineering.

For the area of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, the achievements of 10,355 scientists worldwide were examined, and 2000 of them were included in the ranking of top scientists.

With 22,872 citations and 721 publications, Prof. Frank Allgöwer ranked #8 in the national comparison (out of 140 ranks awarded in Germany). In an international comparison, he was ranked #393 and thus belongs to the top 4% of the 10,355 scientists worldwide in his field.

Also listed in the Best Scientists Ranking in the field of “Electronics and Electrical Engineering” are Prof. Joachim Burghartz (ranked #1,587 worldwide/#48 nationally), Prof. Carsten W. Scherer (ranked #2,856 worldwide/#91 nationally), and Prof. Hans-Joachim Wunderlich (ranked #3,633 worldwide/#118 nationally).

In the area of “Business Management”, research.com examined the performance of 7,819 scientists worldwide and included 1,576 of them in the ranking. Here, Prof. Alexander Brem ranked #15 nationally (out of 44 ranks awarded in Germany) with 9,016 citations and 288 publications. In an international comparison, he ranked #697 and thus belongs to the top 9% of the 7,819 scientists worldwide in his field.

About the methodology of Research.com

Placement in the Best Scientists Ranking is based on a scientist D-index (discipline H-index), which includes only articles and citation values from a discipline under investigation. In addition to the D-index, decisive inclusion criteria of this ranking of top scientists are the proportion of contributions made within the respective field as well as academic awards and achievements.
