Dieter Roller was appointed to the newly established Chair of Fundamentals of Computer Science at the University of Stuttgart in 1991 and established the Department of Graphical Engineering Systems within the then Institute of Computer Science. In the fall of 2002, he founded the Institute for Institute of Computer-aided Product Development Systems (IRIS), which he led until his retirement in spring 2018. During his active service, he also held the offices of dean of students and speaker of the board of the Informatikverbund Stuttgart for several years. He was also an honorary professor at the University of Kaiserslautern and also served for many years as a member of the board of trustees and course director of the Esslingen Technical Academy.

Professor Roller was also chairman of several national and international expert committees, former president of the ISATA forum, which is one of the world's largest technology organizations, and for more than 20 years head of the specialist group "Graphics in Engineering" of the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. In addition, Prof. Roller was an organizer and leader of continuing education events, symposia, and expert congresses, as well as a reviewer for various scientific organizations and for the state government of Baden-Württemberg for national and international funding projects. He was also a reviewer for renowned scientific journals and a member of national and international program committees.

As a former research and development manager with worldwide responsibility for CAD technology at a leading computer company, he also has extensive industrial experience and is the sole inventor of several patents. Last but not least, Professor Roller is also known for a large number of technical lectures in Germany and abroad as well as for being the editor of 76 technical books and more than 200 publications on the subject of computer-aided product development in conference proceedings and technical journals. Prof. Roller also contributes his extensive experience to a wide range of collaborations with industrial companies.
