Once a year, the University of Stuttgart honors the best publications from each of its ten faculties. The Faculty 5 Publication Award for publications from 2019 goes to the research team around Prof. Manfred Berroth and Niklas Hoppe, Institute of Electrical and Optical Communication Engineering.
The award was given for the research paper "Ultra-Efficient Silicon-on-Insulator Grating Couplers With Backside Metal Mirrors", which was published in IEEE magazine and deals with the very efficient and space-saving use of optical fibers on silicon chips for optical communication. With this technology, even very high data rates of more than 100 terrabits per second can be transmitted over optical fiber with almost no loss.
The prize is endowed with 2,500 euros. On the publication awards website, the award winners present their topic in a video. Congratulations!
