Prof. Diekert: Highly acclaimed publications

With Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Volker Diekert, the department loses a valued and long-standing colleague. Since 1991, Prof. Diekert held the chair "Theoretical Computer Science" at the Institute of Formal Methods of Computer Science at the University of Stuttgart. Together with Prof. Volker Claus and Prof. Ulrich Hertrampf, Prof. Diekert taught the theoretical foundations of computer science at the department for decades. A large number of publications and highly acclaimed book publications testify to the quality of the research work done at the chair. Previously, Prof. Diekert received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Regensburg in 1983 and his habilitation in computer science from the Technical University of Munich in 1989.

The reappointment procedure for Prof. Diekert is currently still ongoing. For the time being, Prof. Stefan Funke will take over the management of the institute.

Prof. Ertl: Excellence and cutting-edge research

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dr. techn. h. c. Dr.-Ing. E. h. Thomas Ertl took up his post at the University of Stuttgart on June 1, 1999. The professor of practical computer science directed the research group Graphic Interactive Systems at the Institute for Visualization and Interactive Systems (VIS). He also served as co-director of the Visualization Research Center (VISUS), director of the Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science (SC SimTech) and speaker of the Cluster of Excellence EXC 2075: Data-Integrated Simulation Science (SimTech).

Prof. Ertl was bid farewell with a festive colloquium on September 22, 2023. He will be succeeded at VIS/VISUS by Prof. Dieter Schmalstieg–a top researcher in virtual and augmented reality.
