IEW makes fast charging possible for electric vehicles

Prof. Nejila Parspour, head of the Institute of Electrical Energy Conversion (IEW), and her team are developing wireless electric road systems that can be used to automatically charge electric cars and commercial vehicles while driving or stationary. For this purpose, induction coils are embedded in the road surface.

This so-called inductive and wireless charging is intended to enable more frequent and faster recharging of electric vehicles and thus also allow the use of smaller batteries than previously possible. These require significantly less lithium as a raw material and shorten the still relatively long waiting times when charging without a fast charging station. IEW has filed several patents for this technology.
